What it is
ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It replaces OHSAS 18001 and provides a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better, safer working conditions.
Who needs it
All sectors where worker safety is a concern — construction, manufacturing, mining, oil & gas, healthcare, chemicals, food processing, and any organisation wishing to demonstrate systematic OH&S management to customers, insurers, and regulators.
Benefits of certification
- Reduced workplace accidents, injuries, and occupational diseases
- Improved worker participation and consultation culture
- Lower insurance premiums and liability exposure
- Meets requirements for government contracts and tenders
- Replaces OHSAS 18001 — fully up to date with current requirements
- Includes contractor and subcontractor OH&S management
Audit process
ISO 45001 audits include mandatory on-site shift coverage. Per IAF MD 5:2023, at least one shift inside and one outside regular hours must be audited in the first certification cycle.
OH&S risk classification
OH&S complexity is assessed per Table OHSMS2 — High risk includes mining, construction, chemicals, healthcare; Medium includes food processing and manufacturing; Low includes retail and office services.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Does ISO 45001 cover contractors on site?
Yes. ISO 45001 explicitly requires organisations to manage OH&S risks from contractors and subcontractors performing work under the organisation's control.
Can remote auditing be used for ISO 45001?
Partially. Per IAF MD 5:2023, process control and OH&S risk control cannot be audited remotely — on-site auditing remains mandatory for these elements.
What replaced OHSAS 18001?
ISO 45001:2018 fully replaces OHSAS 18001. All OHSAS 18001 certificates have expired. CAS supports transition and upgrade audits.
